Lamplight (1917) was a poem that I studied whilst at school. It stayed with me throughout my teenage years and so was first choice when we were asked to write a song in my first year at Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Each time I sing, perform, or hear it, I am struck by the sheer simplicity, beauty and gut-wrenching power that this poem conjures.

Performance Instructions
Sing as if speaking. Rhythm is important, but go with what feels natural.
Take your time.
The most important thing is allowing the words to shine through
